Keep your cardstock flat, bright, and ready for projects with simple storage and preservation tips. Learn what causes damage and how to prevent it.

Quick answer

Store cardstock flat in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture. Use a portfolio, acid-free box, or resealable bag to keep sheets clean and uncurled.

Why cardstock needs special care

Cardstock is thicker than printer paper but still vulnerable to humidity, light, and handling. Without proper storage, sheets can curl at the edges, fade in color, or develop creases that ruin a project. Because cardstock is often used for scrapbooking, junk journals, and mixed media, even minor damage can be hard to hide.

Spot and fix cardstock storage problems

Symptom: Sheets are curling at the corners or edges. Check the humidity level in your storage area.
Likely cause: High humidity or storing sheets upright without support. Cardstock absorbs moisture unevenly, causing the edges to warp. Move sheets to a flat storage position with a weight on top.
Corrective action: Place the bundle inside a resealable bag or flat box with a silica gel pack to absorb excess moisture. Stack a heavy book on top for 24 hours to flatten curled sheets. If curling persists, the paper may be too damaged for flattening.
Stop / choose another option: If sheets show water stains, mold, or deep creases that won't press out, discard them to avoid contaminating other paper. Replace with a fresh bundle.
