My kid was thrilled to finally build something that actually makes music, and the light-dependent resistor really makes it feel like magic. Tuning the potentiometer was a neat way to learn how circuits control pitch.

The light-dependent resistor is so responsive that even a slow hand wave shifts the pitch dramatically—my kids and I spent the whole evening building one and then arguing over who got to play it next. Soldering the potentiometer was a great refresher on basic circuits too.
